Malachi is the last Prophet to speak as a voice of God for the next 400 years, giving the period between the OT and NT the name Silent Years. We know from reading Daniel that those years were far from silent as far as God being at work in our lives, it just means no one had HEARD from Him in 400 years.
The Jews have been released for about 100 years now. The slope of sin is getting deep again and Malachi comes as an encourager and a reformer. Faith in the Lord is low and Malachi comes as a messenger, actually the name Malachi means “My Messenger” (from the Lord of course).
So even if you did not read the OT with us, and you are going to jump in for the NT, start here. Set the stage for the reason the Messiah must come. Besides the fact that it is a Covenant Promise, we can see here that we are a sinful people, no matter how many times the Lord saves us, we always sin again.
